Global drug major GlaxoSmithKline has given an option to the Indian drug makers and research firms to join its 'patent pool' programme aimed at developing low cost drugs for 16 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in poor countries. The company has recently launched this patent pool programme.
A GSK spokesperson said in an email to PTI that "Indian drug makers and research firms" can join the programme.
As part of this effort, GSK will share all the patents of its patent pool which are over 500 and other 300 works whose patent applications are still awaiting approval with other entities to develop low cost drugs.
This UK based firm said in its email statement that it is interested in receiving defined research and development plans from any parties to develop small molecule medicine to treat NTDs...
The 16 neglected tropical diseases, chosen by GSK, are -- tuberculosis, malaria, blinding trachoma, buruli ulcer, cholera, dengue/dengue haemorrhagic fever, racunculiasis, fascioliasis, human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis,schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminthiasis and yaws.
