According to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), crop production is likely to mark an increase by 1.7 per cent during the fiscal year 2010. One of its report said, "Food grain production is expected to increase by 1.1 per cent. Of this, wheat production is projected to remain at the same level of 80-million tonnes as estimated for FY 09."
Rice production is projected to increase by 1.1 per cent and touch 98.8-million tonnes. At the same time, production of coarse cereals and pulses is also anticipated to rise in the fiscal year 2010.
In the non food category, the crop production is placed at 2.4 per cent during FY 10. Higher sugarcane and oilseeds production would drive growth even as cotton production is expected to fall.
The production of sugarcane is expected to increase by six per cent and reach 322-million tonnes. However, the price of sugar has increased due to its lower availability.
Although the Government has given its consent for the import of sugar to make up for the shortfall, prices have continued to rise. The higher prices would attract more farmers towards cane cultivation, CMIE said.
It is expected that oilseeds production will be higher due to rise in the production of groundnut and rapeseed.
Cotton production is projected to decline, CMIE said. The Economic Times
