The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make national trade policy to safeguard interests of small traders.
Economic Census, 2005, identifies small traders as one of the largest sector of employment. In this backdrop, the CAIT, in a letter to Singh, asked to formulate the national policy. “The policy should contain ways and means to upgrade and modernise the retail trade and sufficient education and financial assistance should be made available for small retailers to adopt modern business techniques,” Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of the CAIT, said. The Census said the growth in retail sector has witnessed “unplanned” growth, he said, adding, “It needs to be transformed in self-organised sector for which a policy is needed from the Government.” The government should adopt separate parameters for rural and urban areas, he added.
