India and Mexico signed a 10-year Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) on May 21, 2007, to promote easier flow of investments and allow free repatriation of funds by investors.
Under the agreement, Indian and Mexican investors will get equal treatment in both countries. Both countries will grant Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to each other and offer protection including safeguarding intellectual property rights.
Since Mexico is a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which includes Canada and the United States, BIPPA will help Indian companies access those markets as well.
India and Mexico also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a high-level group that will further facilitate trade and investment and explore the possibility of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between the two countries.
