Consumers, paying visits to the farmers market at NGO Colony adjacent to Dindigul, will soon be able to pick homemade items and traditional rural food products along with vegetables.
Collector M. Vallalar informed that it would turn into a one-stop shopping destination for people.
He was addressing a function to mark the final day of 10th anniversary of the farmers’ market, which is located at NGO Colony.
Availability of all the products consisting of spices, rural foods and groceries at one place will enable consumers to have quality items at reasonable rates.
According to him, rural food producers and farmers would also be able to secure better price for their items as they could deal directly with the customers without any agents or middlemen.
The market will be facilitated with electronic weighing scale soon. Efforts are being made to deal in traditional food products such as kambu and keppai koozh, hand-pound rice or kai kuthal arisi, puttu, green gram, vegetable soup and sundal fried grams in the market.
In last ten years, farmers’ market in Dindigul has sold 48,874 tonnes of vegetables worth of Rs.52.30 crore. According to rough estimates, 1.21 crore consumers bought vegetables from the 2.75 lakh farmers in the same period.
