Washington: Anand Sharma, the union minister for Commerce and Industry, has communicated to the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; that determining a “fair” global trade deal under the World Trade Organization (WTO) is possible. This has induced a positive hope of a breakthrough in the Doha Round of multilateral talks.
Sharma reiterated of approaching to a fair solution, that would satisfy all the parties is essential. Its necessary since a perfect solution might be elusive, said Sharma during his meeting with Clinton yesterday. Also he emphasized on the fact that the position of India in the developmental attribute was “central to the Doha round”. India has already lost various key positions for drafting an agreement among the 153 members of WTO.
US Trade Representative, Ron Kirk and Sharma had a discussion to reach to a strategy in order to solve the trade issues with an objective of resolving them to the fullest extent possible. Kirk is also invited to New Delhi for a meeting with a Group of 20 trade ministers.
India has taken a significant step to bridge the differences between the developing and developed countries on agricultural issues in the multilateral negotiations by inviting the USTR at the meeting of G-20 ministers. Sharma discussed the bilateral issues with Clinton and Kirk apart from the WTO negotiations. Clinton stressed the need for intensive bilateral relationship as formulated by the Obama administration.
Sharma re-emphasized the need for strengthening the present scenario of bilateral trade while addressing the annual summit of the US-India Business Council last evening. Press Trust of India
