With the Government of India's plan to uncover the revival package, there is a feeling of cheerfulness among the coffee plantation sector. The package has the probability of including the debt relief scheme for the embattled growers.
Anand Sharma, the Commerce and Industry Minister, is already aware of the problems.
The main states of coffee growth like Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been impinged hard by the fall in the global requirement for coffee and low domestic production.
The modified post monsoon crop forecast of Coffee Board of India for the year 2008-09 is placed at 262,300 tonnes with the arabica and robusta accounting for 79,500 tonnes and 182,800 tonnes respectively.
A fall of 10.48 per cent has been seen in the estimated production.
In comparison to $502.84 million of the previous year, exports have been dipped by over 22 per cent at $411.56 million.
The government is examining a proposal to provide a debt-waiver cum relief scheme. The total relief package is approximated to be in the range of over Rs 1,300 crore and would also include a integrated crop insurance scheme; according to the officials. Hindustan Times
