The Centre for Trade and Development organised a lecture by Prof. Ajit Singh (Cambridge) on the 24th July, 2009. Titled “Global Economic Crisis: An Optimistic Scenario”, the lecture was the inaugural for the Trade and Finance Programme of Centad. Currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge and Chair of the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance, he is recognised as one of the most distinguished contemporary heterodox economists.
The lecture was chaired by Professor Deepak Nayyar and the panellists included Prof. Abhijit Sen, Prof. C.P. Chandrasekhar and Dr. Pronab Sen. Ms. Deirdre Boyd, Country Representative, UNDP India was the special guest for the evening.
Prof. Singh presented a very challenging proposition namely that he considers the present global economic crisis to be very short albeit deep. Various comments from the distinguished panel and an equally distinguished floor saw very interesting and persuasive arguments.
The Trade and Finance programme of the Centre is a response to the global crisis and will consider issues of recovery and policy change with a bearing on development. For more details see the website: http://www.centad.org/finance.asp.
