CCDS- CENTAD WORKSHOP ON WTO FOR PUNE STUDENTS

A workshop on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) organised by the Centre for Communication and Development Studies (CCDS), with resource persons from the Centre for Trade and Development (Centad), will be held in Pune for students of the city’s two law colleges on December 8-9, 2005.

The CCDS is a registered public trust set up to develop and implement strategic and innovative communication tools to bring about a positive change. CCDS works to inspire change in societal attitudes and public policy and its activities are designed to strengthen civil society capacity to institute change.

The overall aim of the workshop, as it is in all the projects of CCDS, is to provide information and knowledge to citizens for empowerment, action and change. Participants will be in a position in the near future to actively shape or direct the processes of future negotiations, so the workshop will aim to interest students in the WTO processes in a personal way.

The workshop’s objective will be to sensitise participants to the likely impacts of WTO decisions and what, if any, role they can play in the negotiation processes. The programme on both the days will be interactive and participatory. The discussions will be led by the following experts:

  • Raghav Narsalay on ‘Introduction to the WTO’
  • Prabash Ranjan on ‘Gains and losses for Indian industry from joining the WTO’
  • Afsar Jafri on ‘Agriculture, livelihoods and the WTO’
  • Gopa Kumar on ‘TRIPS and public health’
