Centad is organising a side event titled, 'Technology Transfer Climate Change and Development: Challenges for Developing Countries ' at UNFCCC SB-28 to be held during June 2-13, 2008 at Bonn, Germany. The side event is scheduled for June 7, 2008 , at MoT, Metro, UNFCCC, Bonn.
The latest meeting of UNFCCC ended with the adoption of two conclusions to facilitate the dialogue and evolve a long term framework of building resilience to climate change. First, ‘Development of a work programme' for the Ad-hoc working group on long-term cooperative actions (AWC-LCA), and second, on new commitments to reduce GHG emissions to be undertaken after 2012 by developed countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol.
The future deliberations among the members will be followed through five themes namely, shared vision, mitigation, adaptation, finance and technology. There is a clear divide between the developed and the developing countries on the preference of themes. The developing countries want adaptation, finance, and technology to be the focal point of discussion, while the developed countries are firm on putting mitigation at the forefront. Also, the developing countries want the 16-year-old commitments be fulfilled first rather than taking up new issues of shared vision and mitigation actions by the developed countries.
The Conference aims at bringing participants from across the globe together on the same platform. With representation from policymakers, academics, trade practitioners as well as the civil society, the Conference would deliberate on a host of issues dealing with technology transfer and trade.
