Panel discussion on ‘Climate Change and India'

The Centre for Trade and Development (Centad), in association with Oxfam International's Economic Justice Campaign, is organising a one-day panel discussion titled ‘Climate Change and India: Run-Up to Bali', on November 16, 2007, at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, India.

The issue of climate change and its impact on the development and livelihoods of people has become a hotly debated issue the world over. For a country like India, whose production process is dependent on fossil fuels, the implications are turning out to be vitally important. The literature already points out that vulnerable sections of society are going to be worst hit by any climate-related behaviour.

The problem is at two levels. Being dependent on fossil fuel-based production, the high cost involved in conversion to a more ‘green' mode of production will affect India substantially. Second, we need to look at our capacity to adjust to change. We need to develop our understanding about the reasons for climate change, on the one hand, and its probable impact on different levels of society in order to formulate a prudent policy and appropriate advocacy.

The conference aims to bring together participants from the prime minister's council, eminent environmental campaigners, civil society organisations, research institutions, mediapersons and individuals on the same platform, with a particular focus on the implications of climate change for India.

Date: November 16, 2007
Time: 9 am
Venue: Casurina Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi 110003, India
