The Centre for Trade and Development (Centad) and the Make Trade Fair (MTF) campaign, Oxfam International, are jointly organising a Brainstorming Meeting on the Indo-EU FTA, on August 21, 2007, in New Delhi, India.
Since the ‘1993 Declaration', extensive political dialogue has started between India and the European Union (EU) on comprehensive trade, investment and economic cooperation. There is renewed interest in an expanded bilateral trade partnership between India and the EU, promising significant benefits.
The recent mandate paper by the European Commission (EC) throws open several challenges and it is important that a thorough discussion is initiated to understand the broad implications of the various issues raised, and how these measures would translate into valuable gains for a developing country like India.
Centad and Oxfam International's MTF campaign will endeavour to bring together select key stakeholders to reflect critically on the current mandate passed by the EC and seek inputs for strengthening the process of trade and development.
Date: August 21, 2007
