School of International Relations and Politics, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, and Centad are organising an international seminar on intellectual property rights (IPR) from August 2-4, 2006.
‘India and the new global IPR regime: challenges opportunities and options’, will examine the political construct of intellectual property rights and its protection. Most importantly, it will study the correlation of IPR and social development in developing countries, with special emphasis on India.
The institutionalisation of IPR through TRIPS has significant implications for social development. Developing countries need technological advances to stimulate economic and social growth and their access to such technology should not be unduly restricted.
Papers to be presented at the seminar will cover issues such as:
- the genesis and growth of the IPR regime
- correlation between the new generic technologies and IPR through TRIPS
- the new patent regime and patent legislation in India in the wake of TRIPS
- critical issues in copyright and trademark
- the implications of provisions related to traditional knowledge and geographical indications.
- experience of Kerala vis-ŕ-vis the new IPR regime
Date: August 2-4, 2006
Venue: Mahatma Gandhi University, Priyadarshini Hills, Kottayam, Kerala, India
