In the run-up to the Ministerial Meeting of the
World Trade Organisation in December 2005, it is imperative to debate the options
that India could take to the negotiating table. Centad launches the ‘Hong Kong
Series of Papers' competition to enrich the debate and ensure a wider representation
of opinions within academia and civil society.
The competition for young
researchers concerns two key areas: - Agriculture
- Non-Agricultural
Market Access (NAMA)
Young trade researchers, economists, lawyers,
doctoral/post-doctoral students, below the age of 35 (as on June 10, 2005) are
invited to submit abstracts on either of the following two themes/topics:
- Subsidies in agriculture in the WTO and India
- Non-Tariff Barriers
(NTBs) in the WTO and India
The paper on agricultural subsidies could,
among other issues: - evaluate how agricultural subsidies in developed
countries have affected agriculture in India by depressing prices of agricultural
products in international markets
- analyse specific domestic and export
subsidy programmes in the EU and US, and existing proposals on cutting subsidy
support, and
- assess the nature of subsidy rules in the Agreement on Agriculture
(AoA) and the possible options available to India.
Similarly the
paper on NTBs could, among other issues: - analyse the existing NTBs
that are affecting market access opportunities for India
- evaluate the
methodology of dealing with NTBs in the ongoing NAMA negotiations, and
- look
at possible negotiating options available to India in the ongoing negotiations
on NTBs in NAMA.
